Would you be shocked if I told you that that Manufacturing employment is on the rise in 2012?
No CommentsThe good news is that manufacturing hiring was up in 2011 and predicted increase even more in 2012. The bad news is that there aren’t enough trained skilled laborers in the American workforce to fill the jobs available. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal (1/19/12), the number of manufacturing jobs in the U.S. grew 1.2% in 2011, or 136,000, the first increase in employment since 1997. Some economists are predicting a 2.5% gain this year. That translates to 330,000 manufacturing jobs. According to the Journal, the hiring is occurring in sectors such as durable goods, computer and electronic products, electrical equipment and appliances and fabricated metal products, among others. In Michigan, we are seeing a great demand for skilled CNC Prototype machinists. The economists’ predictions of job growth this year seem to confirm a poll conducted in December by Managing Automation, a sister organization of Manufacturing Executive. That survey showed that a majority of respondents, 53.5%, have plans to hire more workers this year, a huge turnaround from the 25.6% saying so in last year’s poll. Unemployment in manufacturing is at 8.4 percent, below the overall rate of 9.1 percent. According to the Labor Department’s latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover survey, there were 240,000 open jobs in manufacturing in August, up by 38.7 percent from a year ago. Why isn’t there a larger, up and coming, skilled labor workforce? I would argue it’s a perception problem that begins in the living rooms, and around the dinner tables, of American homes. With massive headlines in the popular media over the last decade showing large manufacturers shedding thousands of jobs, parents have steered their children away from apprentice programs at Community Colleges and High School classes like metal shop, for fear that their wouldn’t be jobs in manufacturing. What the headlines didn’t share is that the jobs being discarded are primarily entry level, low skill-set, “button pusher” jobs. The hiring reflects optimism among chief executives that the economy will continue to strengthen and more workers will be needed to meet demand. Manufacturing has already been a bright spot in the labor market, with U.S. factory payrolls expanding by 225,000 jobs in 2011, more than double the total from a year earlier. “The ground seems to be set for a pretty decent near-term outlook for manufacturing,” says Stephen Stanley, chief economist for Pierpont Securities. “There’s still room for job growth there if demand continues to pick up.” The U.S. may add 1.7 million jobs in 2012, the fastest pace since 2006, based on economists’ estimates compiled by Blue Chip Economic Indicators. Faster payroll growth should spur a 2.3% expansion in the U.S. economy this year, according to the median estimate of 84 economists compiled by Bloomberg. No CommentsTalent Shortage Survey predicts shortage of skilled labor workers By Steve Jagler , of BizTimes .com According to a new study by Manpower Inc., businesses, governments and trade associations need to work together to develop long-term strategies to alleviate talent shortages in the skilled trades. Worldwide, skilled trades positions are the hardest to fill, according to Milwaukee-based Manpower’s global Talent Shortage Survey of 35,000 employers across 36 countries and territories. In a new World of Work Insight Paper titled: Strategic Migration a Short-Term Solution to the Skilled Trades Shortage, Manpower warns that as the global economy recovers, it is necessary to implement strategic migration policies to create a mobile workforce and plug the gap of skilled workers. In the survey, skilled trades refers to a broad range of job titles that require workers to possess specialized skills, traditionally learned over a period of time as an apprentice. Examples of “skilled trades jobs include: electricians, carpenters, cabinet makers, masons/bricklayers, plumbers and welders. The lack of skilled blue-collar workers could impede the progress of infrastructure projects and inhibit national growth such as transportation in India and power in Brazil, for example. It is a problem that national governments must address for the long-term to foster economic health and fuel business growth. In the meantime, increasing the mobility of those workers can help ease the talent shortage. As the global recovery gathers pace, cultivating future talent and alleviating the shortage of skilled workers is becoming vital to ensure economic growth, said Jeffery Joerres, Manpower Inc. chairman and chief executive officer. With unemployment high around the world, migration is an emotive subject but strategic migration will be necessary to create a global workforce and alleviate the current shortage. Countries should be developing policies which facilitate positive migration to fuel economic growth through providing skilled workers where they are needed, rather than creating barriers to immigration. Staffing Industry predicted to be leader in future job growth
No CommentsThe U.S. staffing industry is anticipated to grow faster and add more new jobs over the next decade than just about any other industry, even taking into account the recession. The employment services industry which is primarily staffing will add nearly 600,000 jobs between 2008 and 2018, making it in the ninth largest job-growth industry in the U.S. Over the course of a 10-year projection period, BLS expects almost all job growth to come from service sectors. Employment in goods-producing sectors is expected to decline, except in construction. Job losses in manufacturing will continue, but at a slower pace. Job losses in the goods-producing sector will be principally due to the continued productivity gains. But the greatest number of jobs 4.2 million will be created in the professional and business services sector (which includes staffing), followed by health care and social assistance at 4.0 million jobs.
