Those we don't recruit FOR,
are the ones we recruit FROM
I recently read a Blog by Sharon Alderson entitled, Help! Stop the Headhunter…I say don’t bother.
http://www.recruitingblogs.com/profiles/blogs/help-stop-the-headhunteri-say . The blog discussed how companies are becoming concerned that recruiters are going to be taking away their top level talent, as the economy becomes healthier. The bottom line is—an employee can only be recruited away if they want to be and it is the employer’s job to make sure they take good care of their top level talent, so that the employee does not want to leave. As Danny Cahill says, “you are either my client, or a feeding ground for my clients”.
Recruiters know that the #1 reason employee’s leave a company is because of their dislike for their supervisors and, recruiters also know that the #1 retention tool thrown at an employee who gives his notice is for the employer to throw more money at the employee, rather than fix the problem with the supervisor. The company fails to address the employee’s compelling reason to leave.
It is my hope that employers start waking up to the idea that investing time, dialog and dollars in employee containment is no substitute for employee retention, in its truest form. As the overall blue-collar, skilled trades, candidate pool becomes inverted --with no influx of next-generation talent on the horizon as the demographic facts indicate-- those companies that practice retention principles, while concurrently becoming employer’s of choice, will weather the impending perfect storm..
The ones who fail to see the value of becoming an employer of choice, will continue to provide the talent pool, and many of our clients, with great candidates.
